The Cessna Citation Mustang is a sharp looking single pilot certified private jet. Its comfortable cabin seats four passengers and If flown single pilot, the copilot’s seat can serve as a fifth passenger seat. Powered by two fuel sipping FADEC controlled Pratt and Whitney Canada PW615F engines that produce 1,460 lbs. of thrust each, the Mustang cruises at 340 knots, has a range of 1,150 nautical miles, and can climb to 41,000 feet. Baggage is stored in the forward and rear external baggage compartments that hold a total of 57 cubic feet of bags. The cockpit is equipped with the proven Garmin G1000 three tube avionics suite. The G100 provides enhanced situational awareness, systems indications, Nexrad weather, and Jepp Charts. This aircraft is easy to fly, very capable and a lot of fun. It has a low operating cost of $860 per hour and used Mustangs are selling in the 1.8 to 2.5 million range.
A Cessna Citation CE-560 passes low over a train during a training flight. We were doing multiple practice approaches at Scott Air Force Base in preparation for a type ride with the FAA. Scott is a joint use base with the the Air Force on one side and general aviation businesses on the other. This approach was an ILS to runway 32R with a 200 foot decision height. The Cessna Citation Excel is a straight wing Citation capable of seating 8-10 passengers comfortably in a roomy stand up cabin. The excel was designed with a shortened citation X fuselage, the tail and wing of a Citation V and powered by two and Pratt and Whitney 545A turbofan engines that produce 3,804 lbs of thrust each. The blending of prior successful Citations make this a very impressive jet. It can depart short runways and climb straight to 43,00 feet. It normally cruises at 420 knots and has a 1,850 nm range. The Avionics in the instrument panel pictured here are the Honeywell Primus 1000 integrated digital avionics three screen EFIS system with dual radio control units and two Universal 1C FMS Systems. 30 minutes of emergency attitude display is provided by a Megitt AMLCD backup attitude indicator.

It first flew in 1977 and competed with the turboprop market as a step up entry level jet. When production had ceased Cessna had built 603 CE-550’s. It’s powered by two Pratt and Whitney JT15D-4 turbofan engines that generate 2,500 lbs of thrust each. It cruises at 360 kts and has a range of 1,200nm.

All of the runways have displaced thresholds due to the close proximity of buildings. KMDW is one of the world’s busiest general aviation airports. It’s a hub for Southwest airlines and the FBO’s serve hundreds of corporate jets and private air planes on a daily basis. This Cessna Citation II is landing on runway four right. Of interest is how close houses are to the ends of the runway.

The Cockpit view from a Cessna Citation 550 corporate jet as we fly around weather. We use weather radar and a GNS 530 with XM Satellite and WX Weather Service to avoid the cells. This combination is the best way to go. I like to think of the Garmin as my strategic display for weather planning and the weather radar as my tactical display for maneuvering around cells. At our destination we have to fly around some cells and get into a little rain just before landing.
